Marketing like an alcoholic
I’m offering a new marketing course. it’s free. you are welcome.
I came to a realization the other day when thinking about book marketing, specifically all the things I’m not doing.
First, something I should clarify - we’re not doing traditional book marketing for a few reasons. Time and money are definitely big players in this. Most firms want at least 6 months of work leading up to a book release. They also provide services that are not inexpensive, and while I know the worth, I need to focus on how much I can take on (and afford) in order to work towards the end goal.
The goal being getting the books in the hands of people who need it and to do so in a timely manner - the longer the manuscript stayed on my laptop and in the cloud, the longer it would take to potentially help somebody.
So I decided to listen to all the offers and all the expertise…and then did it my own way. Which felt way too familiar for some reason. Then it hit me.
THIS IS HOW I APPROACHED FIRST GETTING SOBER! THIS IS THE ALCOHOLIC WAY OF MARKETING A BOOK!
I listened to others, I read a lot of what to do, I knew how others did it…and didn’t listen to any of it…I was going to do it my way, on my own...
I sure hope this book doesn’t end with a car crash and handcuffs like my attempts at sobriety did…these little jokes either make you giggle or shake your head. I am aware of that, and I will continue to walk that line :)
So, my new marketing course for those who want to market a book like an alcoholic is what I described. Reach out to professionals, gain all the knowledge, know all the steps to take…and then dismiss it.
This made me laugh so hard when it all clicked. Granted I have my reasons for doing it this way, but in the end, it’s such an alcoholic thing to do.
Oh Mathias, you are a gem, a marketing genius, an incredible mind, a true trail-blazer.
I posted a reel about my current marketing plan, and while we may follow each other, IG may not have shown you that video, so I’ll recap.
We’re shipping NYTFG across the country to treatment and recovery centers. For every 3 books sold, one copy gets shipped. The goal was a one for one, however shipping has proven to be a little more expensive than anticipated.
Our marketing plan could be defined as a seed marketing plan. Yeah, let’s go with that. It sounds more professional than an alcoholic’s marketing plan…either way, it’s a long game. It’ll take some time however we believe in it.
We’re also reaching out to podcasts, to date one has been released with two more coming soon. We’ll be adding a link to all those soon and letting you know when they are available.
Whats that? Got a podcast you’d like to hear us on? Have a friend with a podcast? Let us know at book@notyettoofargone.com. I’ve really enjoyed the podcast conversations to date and hope to be on many more.
In case you missed it previously, NYTFG is available on Amazon, paperback and kindle.
Thank you for being here.
Talk to you soon.
